1. Shalimar Bagh – Srinagar

Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal garden located on the right bank of the Dal Lake in Srinagar. Originally named as ‘Farah Baksh’ (The Delightful), this beautiful garden was built in 1619 by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan. However, today it is famous as the name of Shalimar Bagh ‘The Garden of Love’.

Shalimar Bagh is the largest in size among all three Mughal Gardens in Srinagar, the other being Nishat Bagh and Chashmeshahi. Covering a total area of approximately 539 m by 182 m, it offers an amazing view of lakes and shallow terraces, Innumerable varieties of flowers that blossom in spring and autumn. Garden features a canal, lined with polished pebbles and it is supplied with water from Dal Lake. The canal runs through the center of the garden and looks absolutely stunning. Shalimar Garden organizes a light and sound show every evening, during the period of May to October, when tourists flock to the city in large numbers.

3. Shankaracharya Temple- Srinagar

The Shankaracharya Temple, also known by the name of Jyotishwara Temple or Pas-Pahar, is one of the oldest temples in India. The temple is situated atop of a hillock called as Takht-e-Sulaiman in the heart of the city of Srinagar. The temple dates back to 200 BC, however present structure was probably constructed in 9th Century AD. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and highly revered by the followers of both Hindu and Buddhist religions. The temple was visited by great saint Adi Shankaracharya and has ever since been greatly associated with him. It is said that temple was originally built by Jaluka, the son of emperor Ashoka, a follower of Buddhist religion and hence the temple is also regarded as scared by the Buddhist people and they called this temple as Pas-Pahar.

4. Pari Mahal – Srinagar

Pari Mahal, also known as the name of ‘The Abode of Fairies’, is a seven terraced garden located at the top of Zabarwan Mountain in Srinagar and south west of Dal Lake. It is as much a monument as garden and is just a five minutes drive from Chashmasahi. An ancient Buddhist monastery located inside the garden has been converted into a school of astrology. The garden was established by Dara Shikoh, the son of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the mid of 1600s on the ruins of the Buddhist monastery. He dedicate the garden to his Sufi teach Mullah Shah. Now, the garden has become a property of the government of Srinagar.

5. Hari Parbat -Srinagar

Hari Parbat Fort is an ancient fort in the state of Jammu and Kashmir that dates back to the days of Mughal. Originally, the fort was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar but its present edifice owed itself to the Afghan governor Shuja Shah Durrani, who ruled Kashmir during 18th century. The fort is epitome of religious shrine. It has Sharika Devi Temple on its western slope and the Muslim shrine of Makhdoom Sahib and Akhund Mullah Shah on southern side. Sikh holy shrine of Gurudwara Chatti Patshahi has also enshrines within the premises of the fort. The Kathi Darwaja is the main entrance to the fort.

6. Jama Masjid – Srinagar

Jamia Masjid, popularly known as Jama Masjid, is situated at Nowwhatta in old city of Srinagar. It is regarded as the most important mosque in Kashmir. Built in 1400 AD by Sultan Sikanadar, structure of the mosque resembles the style of Indo-Saracenic architecture and its magnificent courtyard along with 370 wooden pillars invites large number of tourists from across the world.
